Can I use distilled water or spring water in a fresh-water aquarium; if so which is better?

I have done all kinds of reading-up on getting my first-time aquarium (fresh-water) up and running....All filling suggestions have been about tap water, to let it sit and settle, etc. etc......but I have yet to read any kind of suggestion regarding using distilled or spring water....why is that??
