Whats the differences between houses..cape cod, colonial etc?

ive been seeing brochures for houses that say cape cod, colonial & more over and over again...i want to know how many different breeds are there, what are the differences/features, and why do they get their names or a brief history of how the names came to be please. all i know is apartments, houses, condos and townhouses lol
