Have any of you read the Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, if so, what did you think of it?

I read it a long time ago and I wonder why people think it is such a great piece of literature, well, American literature. To put it simply, it would have been more beneficial reading one of Danielle Steele's books. I don't mean to be mean but no wonder she killed herself. She should have sticked to writing poetry, novels are not for her. I did not like the main character at all, racist much? "Peruvians. They're as ugly as Aztecs!" I can still remember that.
